About Holly

I’m a writer who is frequently a nomad. A woman, an oft solo traveler, the builder of an off-grid van, an ex-Mormon, a mother but not traditionally so, I write about life outside and living outside the prescription.

Or here’s a more official-sounding version:

Holly Starley is a writer exploring the wild, self, wild self. She writes about solo travel off the beaten path in the US and South America, nature, building and living in an off-grid van; inequity and the disparities in the systems we live in; post-Mormonism; rape culture and sexual assault; and teen pregnancy, choice, motherhood, and adoption. Through these lenses, she roots in liminality, believing understanding lies in the spaces in between.

Holly has been a freelance book editor for two decades. She wrote and produced a six-episode podcast, “We the Village.” For seven years, she served as managing editor for the Quick Release, a quarterly mini-magazine advocating for equitable access to public streets and cycling. As a founding member of KZAA lp, a low-power, bilingual radio station forwarding Chicanx voices, along with those of others less heard in traditional media, she cowrote foundational documents. She has won awards from the West Virginia press association for coverage of legal issues and governmental affairs, including first place for in-depth/investigative reporting.
